What a beautiful exhortation to the body of Christ!

The charismatic church needs to address the issue of spiritual abuse head on. Too often their counseling centers have little to no knowledge of what went on at Mars hill, or countless other congregations. Too often charismatic leaders preach in ways that push people to commit, or to "answer the call" and do something radical. But I have not found many charismatic leaders that know the devastation that spiritual abuse can bring on a community of believers. My wife and I were fortunate to come out of it wounded, but not completely broken. Others were not so fortunate and still claim to love Christ, but can't even open up their Bible without reliving the trauma that abused scripture can bring. And others have given up the faith entirely.

This story reminded me to thank God again that I dodged the "Born Again," "Evangelical," "Charismatic" movement when those ridiculous "I Found It!" bumper sticker began to appear in the early 1970s. Proud to be a plain, borning, generic, traditional Christian who believes in "one baptism for the forgiveness of Sin."

One thing you DON'T mention is if people are to speak in tongues there should be an interpreter else they should be silent only using tongue between them and the lord. WAY TOO MANY tongues speakers do NOT abide by this rule and speak in tongues with NO interpreter present.
Lately you seem less willing to admit caution is needed to insure one is not dealing with faked gifts and more willing to simply embrace everything and don't worry about it. A very dangerous attitude! This time you've shown that these gifts seem to occupy a higher place in you life then a solid relationship with the Lord. You are attacking fellow Christians who agree with you about the gifts being still available because they know fakes and frauds, some VERY convincing, are out there and simply wish to proceed with caution so as no to fall into a trap.

Some of these charismatic "gifts" somehow appear (according to you "re-appeared") in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We do not see them encouraged in Scripture although there are a couple of passing mentions to "prophecy." "Speaking in tongues" in the Bible is not the same as glossolalia which is what today's speaking in tongues is. There is greater emphasis on callings like being a pastor, teacher, evangelist, etc., and on "one another-ings." (e.g., encourage one another, love one another, correct one another, etc.). Such giants as A.W.Pink, John Owen, John Wesley, etc. are not promoting these "gifts". People like Todd Bentley, Benny Hinn, and, yes, Morris Cerullo have stigmatized some bizarre "moves of the Spirit" (sic). We rented our small church building to a lady Pentecostal pastor (so-called) at a point in time when I wanted to be "open minded" (and was dwelling too much on meeting expenses). Michelle loved to cast out demons. On Sundays, we could pass by the building and hear her at the top of her lungs casting out demons. Her casting out was itself demonic. Dr. Brown, I appreciate many of your teachings. Your learning about Talmudic teachings and errors is unequaled in our time. Your multi-volume commentary is a classic and deserves to be a classic. Typically, you are down-to-Earth and reasonable while advancing the cause of Christ and holiness. But encouraging charismatic manias and thrills is an excess, and it would be great if you stopped doing it. Blessings, Pastor Jack

Peter simply explained that this was what Joel prophesied (see Acts 2:1-17). Then he said at the end of his sermon, “If you will repent and turn to God, putting your faith in Jesus, God will give this same Spirit to you!”
